Introduction to Crochet Along

We are going to crochet a contemporary afghan sampler over the course of the year, starting in March 2016 to be finished (hopefully!) in time for our AGM in March 2017, where we can show off the fruits of our labours to the rest of the Belles!

Here's the basics about our crochet along:

  • The afghan will be comprised of twenty 9-inch squares.

  • There will be five rows made up of four squares each. [Final size: approx. 36" x 45"]

  • We will crochet ten sample-stitches.

  • We will complete two squares each month using one sample-stitch.

  • Each square will be a solid colour, and each sample-stitch will be completed in two colours.*

  • The final blanket will have a total of three colors.*

You will need 630 yards (576m) of yarn in 3 colours to make a 20 square blanket (2 squares each). If you want to make the larger blanket you will need 50% more of each colour. If you want to use more or fewer colours then that is great too. The designer recommended Caron Simply Soft and needed 2 balls of each colour but if you crochet loosely remember to allow extra yarn.

Feel free to choose any yarn you want and remember to pick the correct hook size for the yarn you purchase. This project is designed as a sampler blanket and is suitable for crocheters of any standard so even if you have never been before, feel free to join us! Looking forward to seeeing the colours you choose.

*You may also opt to make a monochromatic afghan, one colour is also a lovely look. OR maybe you want to go multicoloured and use ten, or even twenty, colours. The choice is yours!

The schematic to the right is the suggested layout for your blocks and colours but you can do it however you like. It's advisable to do yourself your own plan if you are doing 3 of each block or using more or less than three colours. This will save you headache's later on we promise!

Crochet Along Block 1

The first block is a classic ridged fabric made using the basic single-crochet stitch. You'll achieve this look by working in the back loop only. There's not a lot to these directions, so here we go.

Tips and Tricks

You will find it a good idea to measure the width of your first chain to check that it is almost 9in wide (don't forget the border will add a bit to it). If it seems wildly too big or two small, try changing your hook size by 0.5mm. It takes a while to learn what your natural tension is. Don't forget, you can always ask for help on the facebook group or at crochet sessions. We're all learning so never be afraid to ask!

As everyone works with a different tension, you may find you get to 9in square before you get any where near 55 rows. It's advisable to keep a tape measure handy so you can keep checking your size. Once you get to about 8.75in you'll probably be big enough to start adding the border!
